The Franklin Half Dollar was first unveiled to the public in 1948, replacing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It enjoyed a popular run until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Just a few months later in 1964, the U.S. Mint replaced the Franklin with a new half dollar honoring the fallen president.
